Getting Ready for R32/A2L Work: A Simple Contractor Checklist
Getting ready for R32/A2L work is not as complicated as it may first sound. In many cases, the goal is not to replace every tool in the van—it is to confirm which tools are already suitable and identify what needs to be updated.
What should be checked before an R32/A2L job?
A quick equipment check before dispatch can prevent delays at the jobsite. Review these six items:

Recovery machine
Check the exact model documentation. Do not assume that every recovery machine is approved for R32/A2L work.

Vacuum pump
Confirm refrigerant suitability, connections, oil condition and the manufacturer’s operating requirements.

Refrigerant leak detector
Make sure the detector is suitable for the refrigerant being serviced, charged and ready before leaving the shop.

Manifold, hoses and fittings
Verify refrigerant and pressure compatibility across the full setup—including hoses, seals, valves and adapters.

Recovery cylinder
Use the correct rated and marked cylinder. Check its test status, available capacity, valve connections and transport condition.

RDS and mitigation setup
Where the approved system configuration requires an RDS, include it in the installation and commission its mitigation function using the exact equipment instructions.
The jobsite procedure matters too
Before opening the refrigerant circuit, review the equipment instructions, provide the required ventilation and control ignition sources. Follow the specified sequence for nitrogen purging, pressure testing, evacuation, leak testing, charging and commissioning.
Do not leave the RDS until the end
When an RDS is required by the listed system configuration, it is part of the installation—not an optional add-on. Install the required detection and mitigation components, then verify the intended response during commissioning. Wiring and control requirements can change by indoor unit, furnace and outdoor-unit configuration, so use the exact approved instructions for that system.
The practical takeaway: R32/A2L readiness is manageable. Check the tools, prepare the jobsite, include the required RDS/mitigation components and follow the equipment instructions.
